Checklist to Design Your Ideal Vacation to Costa Rica
Which adventures?
These adventures are operated for you completely privately by Serendipity
4x4
comfort, flexibility, exploration – always a part of Serendipity guided vacations
White water
rafting, Duckies, Kayaking – for hard-core adventure -or- for conservative adults and/or kids down to about 7 years old
Canyoning:
ropes, harnesses, waterfalls, and a lot of adrenaline
Nature
and bird watching - cloud forest (higher altitude rain forest), jungles (primary old growth forest), wetlands (abundant species of animals and birds), Caribbean coastal (turtles, birds, and beaches) Pacific coastal (large marine life)
Hot Air Ballooning
– over nature filled primary rain forest, rivers, villages – all alone above the clouds, watching Arenal volcano
Horseback riding
, experts to beginners – when you finish, come back to the ranch, wash your horse, take it to his stall then feed it some hay
ATV
(quadracycle) - big burly machines and glorious places to explore. You can take a picnic along or finish your ride at a hot springs
Canopy tour
- ziplines from platform to platform over forest and streams, a bit like Tarzan. We don't operate a zipline, but we sure do have rigid standards for which ones we will use
Tree Ascent - Abraham
: ascend 110 feet up a giant rain forest tree. Have some lunch, look around. Then - rappel back to the jungle floor
Tree Climbing - Joseph
: Ascend inside a living organism - this tree was here when Christopher Columbus arrived
Snake Center - Handling, Understanding
, on a very personal level. Understanding the real meaning of environmental balance.
Culture
– museums, craft areas, churches, from very local to grand cathedral in Cartago
Rainforest restoration and Frog Farm project
, on a very personal level. Don Claudio’s frog farm really opens your eyes on how nature can recover
Mountain biking
, from beginner to expert, biking in area famous for world class competitive biking
Pre-columbian ruins
– Guayabo, Costa Rica’s only archaeological site open to the public
Hiking
for nature, for waterfalls, or to experience real, untouched jungle
Camping
– tents and air mattresses, boats or pack horses carry the gear, and you will not see artificial lights (your flashlight excluded)
Bushwhacking:
Extreme hiking/trek, with a bubbling river to cool off
Caving
- walk, crawl, slither through chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites and underground waterfalls
Latin dancing
- just mention to your Serendipity guide that you want to salsa, and (any excuse to dance, or sing, or play the guitar) -- away you go!
Shopping
- for authentic arts and objects to souvenirs, your Serendipity guide knows some great places
More Adventures

Casinos - San José and Central Pacific Coast only
Deep Sea Fishing - whole Pacific Coast has world class deep sea fishing
Tarpon fishing, Tortuguero (north Caribbean coast) or Caño Negro (north of Fortuna/Arenal area)
Scuba diving, from resort course to cave diver, Pacific coast or south Caribbean
Wind surfing - renowned constant strong winds on Lake Arenal
Moving Around Costa Rica
From staying in one place (for short vacations or naturalist or beach retreats) to transfer buses (for budget travel) to renting a car (for people with confidence in Spanish and Latin driving anomalies) to Serendipity fully guided 4x4 expedition (when you really want places off the beaten path), to planes and helicopters. Serendipity will design around your priorities.
Planes (scheduled or private) and helicopters -- the fastest way to get from 'A' to 'B' but a lot depends on weather
Serendipity's premier service: fully guided bilingual guide, 4x4 luxury vehicle. Get off the beaten path, find the essence of Costa Rica with a well-equipped car and outstanding guide. This is the most reliable, versatile, and entertaining way to get from 'A' to 'B', and put some interesting serendipitous fun between them.
Private driver (not bilingual, not a guide) to drive your rental car
Driving yourself in a rental car
Taxi transportation
Using scheduled tourist buses between major tourist destinations
Staying in one location, and only need transfer to get there and get back from the airport
Accommodations Preferences?
Lodging
From a tent in the jungle to a villa with air conditioning to private homes with staff and a jacuzzi. Let us know the general level of accommodation you expect (and within your budget). It will help us determine which places to recommend.
Priority: a place that is romantic, private, comfortable, with a touch of exotic
Priority: access to nature, away from crowds and tour buses
Priority: spectacular views and sounds and aromas
Priority: Close to great nightlife, casinos, party places
As long as there's a mattress, preferably comfortable...
Running water in a sink is a luxury >
Hot water for a shower is a necessity
I don't mind a tent if you promise me no artificial lights (except my flashlight)
My own bathroom with a real door (economy 3-star hotel)
Simple but bug free - when economy is more important than big screen TV (more or less 3 star hotel)
A touch of elegance (more or less 4 star hotel)
Elegant, luxurious (highest standard available for the area) >
Private residence equipped for real comfort, privacy
My own hot tub and deck with a spectacular view (almost a 5 star, but lacks the large infrastructure required for that rating in Costa Rica)
All-inclusive resort (only available on Pacific coast)
Give us your priorities!
If you've checked a lot of boxes, we're lost. So tell us what your priorities are... Experiences? Lodge? Budget? How happy will your family be? Pure Nature? Pure Adventure? Privacy?
Talk about budget
Serendipity fully guided trips are our flagship, where our reputation was built and still stands. But, sorry, it costs more to operate. When thinking about budget keep in mind (1) security in operations (see our page on
risk
), (2) comfort, (3) diversity, flexibility, privacy, (4) the real fun of traveling with a
Serendipity guide
